Advantages and Disadvantages of working from home
With Boris’s latest announcement of lockdown restrictions being extended for at least another month due to the new Delta variant spreading, more people are finding that they will continue to be working from home, for some this is welcome news for others not so great.
We look at just some of the advantages and disadvantages of working from home
Advantages
- No office distractions, you can focus on the work in hand without having to deal with your (very lovely) but very chatty co-workers!
- Customize your own environment, want total silence that is fine, want the radio on, that is fine too there is no one else to consider so the choice is yours!
- Less time commuting, as you only travel to your home office or dining room less time and stress is spent on commuting by car, train, or bus into the office, which also has a better impact on the environment.
- Increased productivity, with less office distractions and fewer interruptions at home, employees can focus on the job in hand and even work over if they need too as they do not have to leave the office to rush home.
- Financial benefits, Employees will be saving money on fuel, public transport costs and lunches, employees can also claim tax relief for working from home.
Disadvantages
- Working from home may not suit everyone, some people prefer the set routine of working in an office, and the social aspect, working from home can be lonely if you are sat on your own day in day out.
- Information security risk, when laptops are taken home and staff need to work and access servers remotely, there is a greater risk. Employers must ensure the correct measures are put in place to stop this happening.
- Decreased motivation, when working from home, alone all day some people may struggle to motivate themselves for 8 hours a day.
- Waiting on an answer, when in the office you can just shout across at your colleague and ask questions, this is not easy to do when working from home so you could be waiting on a response, stopping you working for a while.
- Slow broadband speeds, depending on where staff live and what broadband they have, this could cause an issue when working.
It is important for you and your employer to choose the environment you are most suited to and will work most successfully in. If you are struggling to work from home, talk to your boss, and try and come up with a solution that suits you both.
